JOY SELBY CAIN: WEAVER | ARTIST 

ARTIST STATEMENT

Joy Selby Cain has a passion for textiles and art in her blood. Growing up in Bay Village, Ohio, she spent her time at a an arts center called Baycrafters. She took classes from preschool to college learning every medium they offered. Her mother worked for Stretch & Sew when she was a toddler, frequently bringing her to work and letting her touch all the fabrics. When she was in fifth grade, she visited a historic farm and was entranced by the spinning and weaving building. She learned to spin and weave in college.

She was gifted with an eye for patterns. Whether it is news, writing, drawing, painting oe weaving, she finds repetition in the world around her. Her painting is rich with color and depth using patterns. to bring depth to shadows and highlights in her subjects. Her paintings and drawings colors often include vibrant colors and line work using ink instead of watercolors. 

Joy has had a long career in graphic design and web development. She has belonged to several reenactment groups based on the Middle Ages and Renaissance, studied Hopewell textiles and is a past president of the Central Ohio Weavers' Guild.
