Care and feeding of shibori items

As you can see, the scarves and shawls I design come in three flavors:

  1. Pleated Arashi Shibori
  2. Flat Arashi Shibori
  3. Woven Shibori

Each require a slightly different care technique.

1. Pleated Arashi Shibori
Because the plates are set on the pvc form, they are delicate. These scarves are strictly dry clean only. Do not get near liquids as the pleats will melt. Do not feed after midnight. I suggest storing these items rolled up in a zip-loc where they will not be crushed.

2. Flat Arashi Shibori
Hand wash in cool water. I use Dawn original as it is mild and does not shift the colors (other detergents have whiteners and brighteners which can alter colors and can be too alkali for silk). I use a little white vinegar in the last rinse to reset the ph of the silk. Line dry. Press using plenty of steam on the silk/wool setting of an iron.

3. Woven Shibori
Hand wash in cool water. I use Dawn original as it is mild and does not shift the colors (other detergents have whiteners and brighteners which can alter colors). Line dry. Press using plenty of steam on the either the rayon (for bamboo items) or linen (for hemp items) setting of an iron.
